A memorable victory against Liverpool

A historical Champions League triumph at BJK Inönü Stadium… While our team was busy snatching a stunning 2-1 victory away from visiting Liverpool in its 3rd match in Group A, our enthusiastic fans staged their own show in the stands. Our goals came from Serdar Özkan (13th min.) and Bobo (82nd min.) respectively.

Beşiktaş fans expressed their rage openly against the recent terrorist activities through Turkish- English banners, national flags, patriotic songs and non-stop cheering way before the kick-off. Waving their star and crescent flags against a background of famous ‘‘My Nation’’ and ‘‘My Country’’ titled songs, they commemorated the martyrs who did not hesitate to sacrifice their own lives in defense of our motherland.
While opening up a giant Turkish flag with ‘‘Martyrs Are Immortal and Homeland Is Inseparable ’’ inscriptions, specially prepared by the club management, they observed a one minute pre-game silence to pay homage to our recent martyrs. They not only condemned the recent killings by the separatist terrorists but also provided full support to their beloved team against a five –times European Champion non-stop throughout the 90 minutes.
Due to a previous suspension our Technical Director Ertuğrul Sağlam watched the game from the stands while Black& Whites stepped on the field with their black jerseys on. Off to an impressive start, Beşiktaş jumped out to a 1-0 lead with young mid-fielder Serdar Özkan at the 13-minute mark. Following a swift counter-attack initiated by Bobo, a close-range Serdar Özkan shot coming out of an 18-yardline scrimmage was deflected in off a Liverpool defender putting Black and Whites 1-0 ahead early in the game. After Koray Avcı replaced Serdar Kurtuluş with 3 minutes left to play, Beşiktaş headed to locker room leading 1-0 at the half.
Just before the second half kick-off, the giant Turkish flag was opened up in the stands once again and fans joined in to sing our ‘‘10th Year March’’ all together. Backed by this tremendous orchestrated support, the Black White team continued to display a courageous effort on the field against a much experienced side. Despite Liverpool's periodic attempts to grab an equalizer, Beşiktaş wasted two golden chances of its own by Bobo and Higuain who entered the game for Delgado in the 62nd minute. However, when the scoreboard showed the 82- minute mark, Brazilian star Bobo made it 2-0 for the home team and sent the crowd wild. The visitors managed to pull one back with a diving header by Gerard five minutes from time but it was too little and too late. Following Bobo’s replacement by Diatta, Black and Whites walked away with a 2-1 hard-fought victory and posted their first win in Group A.
