Post-game comments

Our General Manager Sinan Engin and our players Diatta, Tello and Cisse made following comments regarding the game.

Sinan Engin: “We were seriously thinking of winning this game and never expected a 2-0 loss. Both teams were fully focused but there was a dreadful referee on the field. Turkish teams are often exposed to this kind of biased officiating. Italian referee provided unlimited protection for the French team. There were yellow cards initially but despite ensuing obvious faults the second yellow cards never showed up. We didn’t play that well but we put up a good fight on the pitch. We couldn’t create the chances we wanted. By looking at the performances of the two teams, a scoreless tie would be a more natural score. Nevertheless, Beşiktaş is going to be qualified from this group. Everybody will see that we will beat this team in Istanbul easily.”
Diatta: “Actually the two teams were evenly matched. But we had an unlucky break near the end and they scored against us. I am truly disappointed with the result. We have another 5 games at hand and we will be ready for them.”
Tello: “They put some pressure on us during the first half but we managed to balance the game. However the absence of Serdar Kurtuluş and Ricardinho really disrupted our game plans. Two simple mistakes in the second half changed the whole picture. Nonetheless, right now we must forget about this game and concentrate on our upcoming league game because we still have a chance to get even with Marseille.”
Cisse: “Some of our players in Beşiktaş played in the Champions League for the first time. The outcome was determined by small details. If we were a little more careful, we could’ve walked out of here with a 1 point. And that would be the fair result.”
