“We will enter the Season with a Boisterous Team”

Technical Director Jean Tigana made his first assessment prior to the new season on the Team’s efforts and the renewed players for our internet site. Tigana said that they have been working with great tempo and added “In the new season, we will see a Beşiktaş that was longed for.”

Tigana replied the questions posed by Tuncay Yanım, who is in charge of A Team press relations, and said that the team on the field this year will run all over the field, fight hard, be conditioned for winning and be the way desired by all. Here are the statements by Tigana:
It has been a month since you started getting ready for the season.  How would you assess this period?
We are presently working very hard. This is a fact that our Team has become a lot younger compared to the last year. First, we strengthened the physical condition of the players. Also, we recognized what needs to be improved in the football game we played within the team. We are working on removing them. Furthermore, training on an individual basis is also very important for us and therefore we do extra work with some of the players after regular training sessions. We will begin playing even more games from now on. We will focus on tactical training, train more with such type of variations and get rid of the points that are open for development. One may argue that we are behind other teams with respect to playing games with other teams, but please keep in mind that we are a very new team. We tried to overcome the adaptation process by training within the team.
A team of mostly younger players has been formed. What do you think about their present performance?

As far as I am concerned, it is very important that they have understood our philosophy as of today. This should be kept in mind that working is more important than everything else. They are in the process of understanding and getting this principle. I can say that everything is very positive. I am among the type of technical directors who think hard on raising young players and who have knowledge on that. If you look at the World Cup, there are many players in the French National Team whom I raised and contributed to. Most of them began working with me when they were under the age of twenties. Players such as Sagnol, Henry, Saha and Trezeguet are football players who have worked with me. If some people criticize me, they should look at careers of such players and assess their current position thoroughly. I think that the success of these players is like answers given to such people.
You have transferred very young players. Is this the way you follow?
When the teams that I worked for in the past are reviewed, one can see that I worked with teams consisting of young players mainly. My philosophy is to win and leave good traces by the time I leave. This is not just all. One of my principles is to leave a good future for the team that I worked for. One surely has to invest on young players in order to leave such a future. It is our duty to inoculate many things including their diet, training and professional lives to the players. I experienced in my life as a football player the way a professional football player should train and live. I am trying to give that to the young players I work with.
There are rumors in the media about one last transfer. What would you like to say on that?
In fact, we need one player with extra qualities in order to balance the team. But, he has to be an experienced player. We need a good player who can support us and reflect his experience on the field in all games.
Common belief among the public after the Le Mans game is that Beşiktaş is an aggressive team since it is consisted of young players. What would you say on that?
There are differences between the Beşiktaş team that was here when I came and the current team. We have become more athletic now. It is a fact that we run more and tire our opponents. Our players are stronger and at a higher level with respect to their physical condition. Now, we will begin tactical training. After we overcome that gap also, we will become a complete team. But I should mention that discipline has a significant place among all our work. We saw that in the Word Cup also. Teams that grabbed the success were those that stuck with the play discipline. Italy is a great example.  Especially, we should know that teams that stuck with the team effort along with the discipline were also successful in the World Cup. For example in the game between France and Brazil, the fact that there was not any Brazilian player by the back pole when Henry scored the goal is a perfect example of the lack of discipline that I am talking about. All such examples show that no matter how hard you work, even the slightest lack of discipline can cost a great deal. We saw that teams that played in the World Cup finals had minimized such mistakes. That is why they were successful. It may be objective to say the time that the team will be ready. All our practices from now on will be upwards. I believe that we will reach to the level exactly we want by October. But, no one should make the mistake that we will be less that our competitors before October. We will always train very hard and be in the competition in the league.
What are your objectives for the next season?
My objective is to win and only to win. I can not accept defeats. I never like to be behind others in a race. Our weakest point last year was the games we lost at home. We lost 7 games during my term; as for the away games, we lost only the game against Galatasaray. We will not make the same mistake again this year. Currently the team is working very hard. There is no difference between what the fans want and what we want to accomplish on the field. That is, I believe that we will play the football that our spectators would like to see.
