Even though Beşiktaş Women’s Basketball Team posted a 68-59 victory over Halcon Avenida from Spain in the rematch game of the quarter finals in FIBA European Cup, the team was eliminated from the Cup since it could not score a gap of 19 points.
Both teams began the game with tough defense and thus the score was 0-0 by the end of the first 2 minute period. Beşiktaş Cola Turka, warding off its opponent’s attacks successfully in the first few minutes, was not able to take advantage of the chances it got with Johnson and Selwyn. Black & White players did not have difficulty in stopping Schumacher, who was pointed as one of the most dangerous players in the opponent team, could not stop Elena Tornikdou. Making good use of the empty spaces, the experienced player scored all 10 points of Halcon Avenida, which was in 10-4 lead at the beginning of the 5th minute. The first period was wrapped up with the Spanish team being 14-13 in the lead.Black & White players tried to take control of the game in the second half. Beşiktaş Cola Turka stopped its opponent’s attacks and tied the score at the 5th minute (18-18). Laine Selwyn, scoring a 3-pointer with a few seconds remaining, put Beşiktaş Cola Turka 25-24 ahead, and the first half was finished with that score.
Selwyn, one of the successful players of the day, scored a 3-pointer at the beginning of the 3rd period and made the score 32-29. However, a quick response for that basket came from Spaniards and the score was tied again. Schumacher shouldered her team with her successful performance in this period and scored a three pointer in the last second and the tying the score at 42-42 for Halcon Avendia, and the third period was completed with a tie in scores.
Last part of the game was played very contentiously. Black & White team, needing a margin of 19 points to make the semi-finals, scored points thanks to effective performance by Nihan Anaz under the rim and began widening the gap. Our team, trying to score points in the outer shots with Selwyn and Johnson, played with a low-scoring ratio throughout the game despite the points scored in the last moments. Halcon Avendia kept the deficit under balance thanks to effective play of Schumacher in the last period and responded well at the points we scored in the last minutes. Beşiktaş Cola Turka increased the gap up to 11 points from time to time in the last period; but said farewell to FIBA European Cup since it was short of 19 points difference despite it grabbed a 68-59 triumph.
