Even though our A National Football Team posted a 4-2 victory over Switzerland in the play-off rematch game of 2006 World Cup European Eliminations, it lost the opportunity to play in the 2006 World Cup, since it was defeated 2-0 in the first game.
Our National Team got 1-0 behind right at the beginning of the game when the referee gave the penalty for the ball which hit Alpay’s hand in the penalty zone. Getting over the shock caused by the early goal, our National Team worked very hard on the opponent’s goal in order to score. The National Players, who created goal opportunities with Tuncay and Hakan before the crowded Swiss defense, tied the score thanks to the head shot goal scored by Tuncay. Our National Team, which kept control of the game completely and almost blockaded the opponent team’s goal, scored the 2nd goal with Tuncay again at the 38th minute and completed the first half 2-1 in the lead.Making a fast start into the second half, our A National Team made the score 3-1 thanks to the penalty goal scored by Necati at the 52nd minute. Our National Players increased its pressure thanks partly to Tümer Metin, one of our own players who joined the game, but could not stop the goal scored by Streller at an unexpected attack made by Swiss Team in the 84th minute, and the score became 3-2. In spite of that, our National Players did not lost the grip of the game and made the score 4-2 thanks to the head shot by Tuncay at the 89th minute. However, since it had lost the first game with 2 points difference, our National Team had to farewell the World Cup.
