Beşiktaş played its first match of 2004-2005 in the league against Malatyaspor which ended in a 1-1 draw.  

Although it played  good soccer in the first match of the year and managed to produce 9 scoring opportunities, Beşiktaş was unlucky till the last seconds.  After the shots by Daniel Pancu and John Carew were denied by the cross-bar, it was Ali Güneş who was lucky in the extra time. 
Ali Güneş ruined the 3-point dreams of Malatyaspor that were given a boost by Yunus in the 21st minute, with his goal that came in the extra time.  5 Norwegian Journalists also came to Malatya to watch Norwegian striker John Carew in the match.
