As expected, with a string of corner-kicks, the home side Napoli applied the early pressure, but it was Beşiktaş who would take the lead as Adriano Correia converted a super Quaresma pass from the 6-yard line on 13 minutes. The home side recovered quickly and levelled through Mertens at the half-hour mark, only to see Beşiktaş surge back in front with Vincent Aboubakar, who took advantage of a bad back-pass 8 minutes later. The Black Eagles were up 2-1 going into the intermission.
The Italian team went all out in the second half and won two penalty-kicks. The first one was saved by Fabricio, but Gabbiadini wouldn’t miss the second one to make it 2-2 after 69 minutes. However, the resilient Black Eagles refused to quit as they found the target one more time through Aboubakar 4 minutes before the full-time and picked up their first Champions League group stage win at the San Paolo.
