Simao, Almeida and Fernandes Join Beşiktaş

In ceremony attended by Chairman Yıldırım Demirören, Beşiktaş have signed Portuguese players Simao Sabrosa, Hugo Almeida and Manuel Fernandes.

In addition to Beşiktaş Chairman Demirören, Deputy Chairman Responsible for Financial Affairs Ertunç Soğancıoğlu, Deputy Chairman and Head of Football Committee Serdal Adalı and, Football Committee Member Cengiz Zülfikaroğlu were also at hand to witness the event, which took place at the BJK Nevzat Demir Sports Complex Monday afternoon.
Simao Sabrosa, Hugo Almeida and Manuel Fernandes showed up for the signing ceremony wearing Beşiktaş’s traditional striped jerseys.
Before the players penned their contracts, Chairman Demirören took the floor and thanked Serdar Adalı and Cengiz Zülfikaroğlu for their role in bringing them to the club.
Throwing light on the significance of the new signings, he said, “This is no ordinary day because these talented players will not only contribute to our Beşiktaş but to the Turkish football as well.”
Demirören then continued:
“In general, I am against mid-season transfers because they often end up disturbing the balance of the team. However, when these internationally known players openly expressed their desire to play for us, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. As usual, some are ready to criticise these new signings as a drain on resources and a cover-up for our current place in the table. But let me tell you this, we are not here to save the day. We are trying to get all the right players and build the team of the future. I’d like to see them find and sign the same quality players during this short period time. By bringing in Quaresma and Guti at the start of the season, we have elevated Beşiktaş to a new level, a place that has taken others many years to achieve. When we signed them, we were not thinking of this season but the next season; because it takes time to put together a contender, and the champions are not created over night. Unfortunately, we got a little sidetracked from our goal in the first half of the season, which forced us to bolster our squad, while letting go some players. I have no doubt these new additions will lead us to new heights. On the other hand, since it is not possible to sustain a championship team without a good source of young talents, they will provide a great role model for our young players to learn from.  It takes time, money and hard work to bring these types of high-quality players into our country. Before setting foot on our soil, they are all well acquainted with the goals and objectives our Beşiktaş. They know that winning Turkish titles without the success in Europe satisfies no one here. They are also well aware of fans’ expectation and devotion to acquire it. Believe or not, my conversation with Simao lasted only half an hour. He understood me perfectly because he is a true professional and has many years of experience under his belt. We like to see his kinds of players more often in this country.  Unfortunately, due to UEFA regulations, only one of these three players will be able to play for us in the Europa League. And we have decided to leave this decision to the team manager.  As it is often said, believing is half of achieving. If they believe in themselves and become a part of our team as quickly as they can, I am certain that together we can achieve our goals not only next season but this season as well. We just have to be patient and give them some time. Yesterday, there were over two thousand fans to welcome them at the airport, a huge crowd by any standards. But if we held today’s signing ceremony at the Inonu Stadium, there would be more than forty thousand. This shows how great and loyal Beşiktaş fans are.
Getting back to our young players, I’d like to point out that we are taking five more rising talents to our winter camp in Antalya. As you all know, Necip is already with the senior team, and Muhammed Demirci is coming along quite fine. But let us not forget, when the going gets tough, the experience counts more than anything in a competitive environment. So we have to blend experienced and young players real carefully.”
When asked if the fans would be able to watch Ronaldo or Messi in Beşiktaş uniform in near future, the Chairman was quick to reply, “Everything is possible in football. When we mentioned the names of Quaresma and Guti playing for us before the start of the season, the majority of football critics didn’t believe us, but here they are. These are no small steps for Turkish football. With the new signings, we have strengthened our European footballing ties and raised our recognition.
After the Chairman’s speech, the new players shared their thoughts with the press one by one. Beşiktaş’s addition from Atletico Madrid Simao Sabrosa said he was delighted to be at Beşiktaş and would spare no effort to make Beşiktaş fans happy. Portuguese centre forward Hugo Almedia expressed his desire to score as many as goals possible in the second half of the season to help Beşiktaş narrow the gap with the league leader.
Beşiktaş’s new midfielder on loan from Spanish outfit Valencia Manuel Fernandes underscored the greatness of his new club and added, “For the time being, I am here for only six months, and I know the difficult task ahead of me. It is not easy to make up fourteen points in such a short time, but I’ll go out there and do the best I can. If we can get a winning streak going at the start, we may change the whole picture completely. In football nothing is over until the final whistle.”
Under the watchful eyes of Chairman Yıldırım Demirören’s youngest son Cemal, who was introduced to the gathering as the next Chairman, the players signed their contracts to become new Eagles and culminate the event.
A photo session followed the ceremony as Chairman Yıldırım Demirören, Deputy Chairman Responsible for Financial Affairs Ertunç Soğancıoğlu, Deputy Chairman and Head of Football Committee Serdal Adalı and, Football Committee Member Cengiz Zülfikaroğlu posed for the press together with Beşiktaş’s new signings.
A vocal group of Beşiktaş fans chanted and cheered outside the BJK Nevzat Demir Sports Complex in support of the new players.
