Fenerbahçe 86, Beşiktaş Cola Turka 59

Visiting Beşiktaş Cola Turka women’s basketball dropped an 86-59 decision on the road to arch-rival Fenerbahçe in Week 10’s Istanbul derby.

The Lady Eagles opened the first with consecutive jumpers by Castro Marques and Kelly Santos to jump to an early lead. Fenerbahçe responded with Birsel Vardarlı, Esmeral Tunçluer and Matoviç but had a hard time to contain the hot-handed Santos, who teamed up with Yasemin Horasan to keep Beşiktaş Cola Turka in front for most of the opening stanza. Nevertheless, a late spurt sparked by Penny Taylor’s unanswered buckets gave the home team a19-15 edge going into the second.
Thanks to Santos and Esra Ataç, the Black and White started the second frame on a 5-0 run to go up, 20-19. Then Hanaka Horakova and Sales traded a number of three-pointers and kept the score close. But then Birsel Vardarlı got into action and took charge of the Fenerbahçe offense as the yellow and navy-blue opponent surged ahead by four points, 35-31, with 2:10 to go. Beşiktaş Cola Turka managed to pull within two entering the final minute, but a last second Nevriye Yılmaz tip-in reestablished Fenerbahçe’s four point advantage, 37-33, at the interval.
Following a brief exchange of jumpers, Ivana Matovic and Nevriye Yılmaz converted back-to-back layups early in the third to help the home team maintain its dominance in the second half. Birsel Vardarlı followed them with a floater from 14-feet as Fenerbahçe’s lead grew to 7 points, 45-38, with 7:15 remaining. Although Yasemin Horasan’s nailed a bank shot to prevent the cross-town rivals from pulling away, Fenerbahçe rode the scoring of Penny Taylor and Nevriye Yılmaz rest of the quarter to extend the margin to fifteen points at 66-50, entering the final frame of the play.
After Nevriye Yılmaz hit two free throws to start the fourth, the host was never seriously threatened in the final quarter. The Lady Eagles tried to get back into it with occasional jumpers by Simone Seles but could not get any sustainable offense going. While the Black and White struggled at both ends, Penny Taylor combined efforts with Ivana Matovic and Esmeral Tuncluer down the stretch to build a 25-point cushion for Fenerbahçe en route to a lopsided 86-59 victory.
