Guti’s Press Conference

After his training sessions, Beşiktaş’s Spanish Star Guti Fernadez held a press conference at the BJK Nevzat Demir Sports Complex and responded to rumours circulating about him in the Turkish press.

“This conference mainly concerns a newspaper article published last Thursday. I waited until today because I did not want this matter affect my and my teammates’ concentration before our derby match against Galatasaray. But I think it’s time to set the things right once and for all.
The news published on a newspaper here about a court case in Spain was a typical case of mudslinging against me. First of all, I am a father of two and carry a fairly positive image in the eyes of public. This baseless article tries to ruin to ruin my personal life and career. Before writing such a finger-pointing article, the reporter should have carried out an honest research and check the validity of his facts. Acting in an irresponsible way, the reporter has overlooked the damage it would inflict on me and my family. My club and I will file a suit against the said reporter and his paper to vindicate myself of any wrongdoing. All these years, I always believed that a reporter would never distort facts and mislead public. Fabricating news is a criminal offense in my country. From now on, we are going to stay away from this newspaper as much as we can. And I also don’t want to be shocked by these types of false accusations every morning because I came here to play football, not become a subject to bottomless paparazzi stories. I will never take these unjustified rumours lying down and will fight them till the end.”
When reminded that the news originally came from the Spanish media, Guti responded:
“Yes but unfortunately, the Turkish media have distorted the facts so we have two different stories in our hands. Let me explain what was written in the Spanish press. A court case about the two people I know, and I don’t know if they have committed any crime. That’s my only involvement in this affair. I have received no summons from any Spanish court, and I am not being held accountable of any crime. However, the Turkish Media is jumping to conclusions too soon as it accuses me with the crimes the other two persons supposedly carried out. In short, while there is no accusation filed against me in Spain, here, some reporters for some unknown reasons are including me in the same lawsuit with the others.
As you see, there is a subtle difference in stories coming from the two media. In addition, no Spanish paper reported that I had sexual relations with under- aged girls. But the said Turkish reporter implied I might have sex with them. No such thing ever took place, and if it did, I’d be in a Spanish court and possible in a Spanish jail right now; because they are very serious crimes in Spain.  I don’t how and why they fabricate such rumours in this country. One thing is for sure, they all want to discredit me before the public and tarnish my reputation.”
Then the Spanish reporter changed the subject and replied questions about Beşiktaş’s derby win over Galatasaray:
“After the match was over, I flashed a sign to the TV cameras, which denotes the letter “N” in sign language. “N” is the first letter of my girl friend’s name Noella, my best fan in the world. She is my closest mentor here and is helping me get through these difficult days. I wanted to tank her for the support she has given me. But from now on, I am thinking of being real careful in front of the cameras because there are a lot of people out there who are ready to misinterpret my actions.
I believe we played a good game against Galatasaray and came away with our heads held high. This win will motivate for our future games. I hope it sparks a winning streak we desperately need these days.
Despite recent results, our current 5th place in the table satisfies no one in the club. We could’ve been a top the table right now had we not dropped too many points to weaker teams. We must not lose our concentration in these types of matches because, with so many evenly balanced teams around, the points are getting harder to earn.
Injuries are another reason why we are here today. Since the beginning of the season, we always missed 4-5 clutch players from our original starting line-up. How can you win matches we your key players are out with injuries? But I believe most will recover soon, and we’ll be a much better team in the second half of the season.
I am really happy to be in Istanbul because it is a great city for any kind of activity. In many ways, it reminds me Madrid City. I also enjoy the attention I get from the fans. They all act sincerely and openly. I believe, after Real Madrid, Beşiktaş was the right choice for me so I thank all those who made my transfer to this great club possible.

When queried about Beşiktaş Manager Bernd Schuster's recent remarks about the 60s style of football being played in Turkey, Guti answered quickly:
“Turkish League is an important league in Europe. If we want it enhance its quality, we should not only focus on the scoreboard but pay attention to the performance as well. Otherwise, we see a real slow football being played on the pitch with defence playing a larger role. Turkish teams should not shy away from offensive football, which is widely favoured in other countries.
In reference to tonight’s derby match between Barcelona and Real Madrid, as you all now, Real Madrid is my former team and I want them win. If you’d ask me if I would like to play in that match, I’d answer, “No thanks, I am happy where I am and still enjoying our own derby victory we posted yesterday.”
The Turkish- descent Mesut Özil is going to help Real Madrid a lot this season because as I watched him in the recent World Cup, he is an extremely talented player. I hope his team goes all the way this season and win everything ahead of them.”
The Spanish Star ended the conference by reflecting on his former teammate and best friend Raul, who now plays for the German Bundesliga side Schalke, “I’d be lying if I said I don’t miss him. We’ve spent together so many years I feel like he is a part of my own family. I wish he came here and played for us. I am sure we’ll get together when we both retire.”
