Galatasaray 1 – 2 Beşiktaş

The Black Eagles recorded a 2-1 win away to arch-rival Galatasaray on Day 14 of the Turkish Super League.

The critical Istanbul derby at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium started off with the home side having majority of the early possessions while Beşiktaş seemed more content to fend off Galatasaray attacks with their packed defence.  But the Eagles got a break when Ali Turan brought Holosko down inside the box just 8 minutes into the game. The referee did not hesitate to show the penalty spot, and the ensuing conversion by Guti fired the Black and White on top, forcing the yellow and red to play catch-up rest of the way. As the match moved on, Galatasaray took complete control of the midfield and came knocking at the door twice, but in both occasions, Pino failed to beat keeper Cenk Gönen, who kept the home team at bay with a series of superb saves. The Black and Whites were a goal up at the half.
Desperately needing a goal to keep their title hopes alive, Galatasaray Manager Hagi brought in more forwards into the match, but despite a number of crosses into the danger area, the yellow and reds were finding very hard to break down the resolute Beşiktaş defence. In the meantime, they left large gaps at the back for the Eagles to counterattack. In one of them, Holosko’s shot hit the left post and came back into play. Galatasaray’s luck ran out when Nobre headed home Guti’s perfect cross on 79 minutes and doubled the Black and White’s lead. The host pulled one back in stoppage time through Australian International Harry Kewell, but it was too little and too late as the Eagles emerged 2-1 victors to pick up all three points.
