Goettingen 85, Beşiktaş Cola Turka 83

A last-second jumper gave Goettingen of Germany an 85-83 victory the visiting Beşiktaş Cola Turka Men’s Basketball in their second Eurocup Group B action Tuesday night.

The home team opened the game on a 6-0 before Mire Chatman teamed up with James Oglivy to pull the Eagles within 9-8 at the halfway point. But late treys raining in from all over the court powered the Germans to a 26-20 first-quarter lead.
After Michael Ignerski hit a 3-pointer to start the second and cut the deficit to 3 points, Beşiktaş Cola Turka stiffened up on defense but couldn’t stop Trenton Mecham, who pushed the margin to 30-23 three minutes into the quarter with back-to-back jumpers. The Germans were up by ten, 35-25, with 5:10 to go in the first half. Thanks to late layups by Jason Boone, they maintained that lead in the remaining minutes and went into the locker room with a 45-34 advantage at the break.
Despite Scott Mike’s second-half opening three-pointer from downtown, the Eagles roared back to life in the third as they began to chip away at the lead behind strong defense and clutch shots. But Goettingen refused to let Beşiktaş Cola Turka get too close and rallied back behind a barrage of three-pointers to extend its advantage back to double digits, 62-48, with 4:05 remaining. Nevertheless, Ogilvy and Ignerski combined efforts to spark a late Eagles’ surge that trimmed the deficit to 68-63, entering the final frame.
Beşiktaş Cola Turka continued to dictate the pace in the fourth quarter and surged ahead, 71-70, after four minutes on an Ogivy layup, its first lead in the game. The contest then turned into a see-saw affair with the lead changing hands back and forth. With 10 seconds left to play, the teams were locked in an 83-83 tie. Beşiktaş made a last-ditch attempt to steal the win. But after Mire Chatman’s shot bounced off the rim, Trenton Mecham drove down the court and sank a running jumper as time expired to lift the Germans to a dramatic 85-83 Eurocup win.
James Ignerski led the Eagles with 21 points while Allen Iverson (18), Ogilvy (17), Chatman (14), Ismail Çevik (5), Likholitov (3), Bekir Yarngüme (3) and Cüneyt Erden (2) also contributed to the offensive output of Beşiktaş.
