Fenerbahçe Ulker 74, Beşiktaş Cola Turka 67

In a clash of Istanbul giants, the visiting arc-rival Fenerbahçe Ulker squeezed out a 74-67 victory over Beşiktaş Cola Turka at the Arena Sunday.

The Eagles opened the game on a 6-0 run with 6-foot-11 Likholitov dominating inside. Then back-to-back driving layups from Mire Chatman and Cevher Özer pushed that lead to 11-5 midway through the first. But the hot-shooting Ömer Onan joined forces with Goran Dragic and Oğuz Savaş to knock down back-to-back threes and prevent the hosts from pulling away. In the closing minutes, a Marko Tomas 3-pointer from behind the arch capped a late Fenerbahçe run and put the visitors ahead, 22-21, their first lead in the game. Going completely cold from outside, Beşiktaş Cola Turka failed to respond and was down 27-21 heading into the second quarter.
The yellow and navy blue cross-town rival carried the momentum into the second as Oğuz Savaş and Ömer Onan poured in six unanswered to give their team a double-digit advantage at 39-29 with 3:10 remaining in the half. The Eagles woke up from their slumber near the end and managed to creep to within five points, 40-35, at the break, on a string of jumpers by Cevher Özer and Ogilvy.
While Likholitov led all scorers with 16 points, Allen Iverson went 0-for-3 in the first half. Ömer Onan and Oğuz Savaş both chipped in 10 points for Fenerbahçe Ulker.
Fenerbahçe lost its shooting touch and began to fire blanks in the third. Beşiktaş Cola Turka took advantage of its opponent’s dry spell as it rode Likholitov’s hot-hand to jump back in front, 47-46, with 4:12 left. The margin grew to seven points, 53-46, entering the final two points, but Mirsad and Oğuz Savaş made consecutive layups to tie the score at 53 with one quarter to play.

In the early going of the fourth, the visitors regained the lead on a flurry of three-pointers by Ömer Onan, Marko Tomas and Ivan Ukiç. The Eagles tried to remain within reach behind Serhat Çetin’s 3-pointers but still trailed by eight, 71-63, at the midway point. Nevertheless, the Eagles succeeded in bringing the deficit back to four, 71-67, in dying minutes, only to see Fenerbahçe Ulker convert numerous offensive boards into easy baskets down the stretch to come away with a hard-fought 74-67 victory.
Ömer Onan scored 20 points for the visitors followed by Oğuz Savaş (12), Marko Tomas (12) and Ivan Ukiç (10). Beşiktaş Cola Turka Center Fedor Likholitov finished with a game-high 22 points.
