Beşiktaş Cola Turka 71, Samsun Basketball 67

In Turkish Women’s League Week 1 postponed game, visiting Beşiktaş Cola Turka clipped Samsun Basketball, 71-67, at the Yaşar Doğu Sports Hall Wednesday.

After Gülşah Akkaya made a short jumper for the home team to start the game, the Lady Eagles got back-to-back layups from the trio of Iziana Castro Marques, Tuğba Taşcı and Nilay Kartaltepe and were up 7-6 with 7:15 remaining. But the hot-shooting Gülhşah Akkaya and Makbule Amachree combined efforts to give Samsun Basketball a 20-17 advantage by the end of first quarter.
Even though both the teams hit nothing but the rim early in the second, layups by Jessica Adair and Brown extended the home side’s lead to nine, 28-19, at the halfway mark. As the game rolled on, Marques and Salkauske each popped in jumpers to put an end to Beşiktaş Cola Turka’s scoring draught and get their team back on tract. The lady Eagles then used an 11-1 run that turned their nine point deficit into a 34-33 halftime lead.
Thanks to consecutive buckets by Iziana Castro Marques and Esra Erden, the Black and White pushed the margin to three points, 39-36, two minutes into the third but fell fate to the hot hand of Jessica Adair as the score was tied at 41 midway through the quarter. Nevertheless, Nilay Kartaltepe teamed up with Kelly Santos near the end to take up where she left off and helped Beşiktaş Cola Turka carry a 52-48 edge, into the final stanza.
The fourth quarter saw the Lady Eagles stretch their advantage to 58-50 on jumpers from Kelly Santos and Iziana Castro Marques with 8:00 left in the game. But Samsun Basketball refused to give in and rode Gülşah Akkaya’s scoring to remain within reach. Beşiktaş Cola Turka Women’s Basketball Team clung to a one point, 67-66, lead entering the final minute. The host team tried desperately to close the gap during the remaining seconds, only to see the Lady Eagles fend off all attempts to walk away with a well-earned 71-67 victory.
