Gençlerbirliği 0 – 2 Beşiktaş

The visitors Black Eagles blanked Gençlerbirliği 2-0 at the Ankara May 19 Stadium on Day 12 of the Turkish Super League.

Led by the international duo of Guti and Quaresma, Beşiktaş pack asserted their authority right from the kick-off, peppering Gençlerbirliği defence with strong attacks from the both flanks. After Tabata’s 20th-minute free-kick destined for top corner was parried away by the home side’s keeper Serdar Kulbilge, Gençlerbirliği began to push forward more. They tried their luck with long-range shots from Hurşit Just when it seemed the first half would end goalless, Beşiktaş won a penalty when Tabata was dragged down inside the box in injury time. Guti sent the keeper to the wrong side to give his team a one-goal advantage heading into the dressing room at the break.
The second half started slowly with the Black and White looking happy to sit back and preserve their lead. As Gençlerbirliği eventually surged forward to find the equaliser, they left large gaps at the back for Beşiktaş to counter-attack, but the Eagles failed to capitalise on them. During a late goal mouth scrimmage, the home side almost grabbed the equaliser, but their shot hit the post and went wide. While Gençlerbirliği’s offensive woes continued, Hilbert sprinted to the other end in stoppage and hammered one home from 15 yards out to close out the scoring for the night.
